In the month of September of the year 1976 an interest group known as TAW (Typical Alpha Women) was created with the vision of becoming a part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. This group, started by freshman Madelyn Jarvis began with twenty- three young women who started their vision by working on various service projects at what was then known as Northeast Missouri State University and its surrounding community.

During the next school year the group gained seven more members for a total of thirty interested women and began to gain the guidance of then Madame Mid-Western Regional Director Ms. Deloris Gines. The group also began to establish leadership and the officers were as follows:

President: Madelyn Jarvis

Vice-President: Sandra Taylor

Secretary: Joan Williams

Treasurer: LaDonna Wright

With the leadership of Ms. Gines the TAW continued to pursue their commitment to service. However, they were becoming discouraged in their vision to become Alpha Kappa Alpha women. Many transferred schools and some even quit the group. The meeting began to become infrequent and the journey to AKA land seemed to be well beyond reach.

In the Spring of 1979 with the help of three more young women TAW remained dedicated to achieving their goal of creating an active chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated on the campus of Northeast Missouri State University. On Saturday March 31, 1979, at Northeast Missouri State University the initiation and chapter instillation took place. The chapter was given the name MU TAU and the principles of dedication, service, and leadership through sisterhood were born.
